The Burnet High School girls basketball team lost to Stephenville 65-15 Nov. 14.

“They came out and they pressed us hard,” said head coach Kim Payten, who is in her first year with the Lady Dawgs. “They got buckets from the press. They’re very well coached, they’re very well put together. They can shoot.”

In an attempt to change the momentum, Payten said she called for different defenses, opting for a full-court man to a zone.

“They had an answer for everything we did,” she said.

Despite the outcome, Payten pointed out she saw some positives during the contest.

She liked the way the Lady Dawgs played defense, she said.

“We had really good defense,” she said. “The score would have been a lot worse. We have to build on it.”

Senior post Wrigley Mulhollan, who is the team rebounding leader, continues to be consistently good.

“Wrigley has a dog inside her,” the coach said. “She gets after it. She leads in rebounding. Wrigley wants to win. She’ll do anything I ask her to do.”

And sophomore Maycee Floyd, who is the team leader in steals, is emerging as a steady outside shooter. Payten noted that many of Floyd’s shots came with two defenders in her face.

“I think she’s been working outside of our practices,” the coach said. “She has a little sister (freshman Ava Floyd), who’s in the program. I think they’ve been getting after it together. I’m very excited about. I hope it stays that way. I think she’s really hungry.”

The Lady Dawgs will have their home opener against Copperas Cove Tuesday, Nov. 18, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m., the varsity at 6:30 p.m. and the freshmen at 7:30 p.m. It’s a double header with the boys.

Then the Lady Dawgs travel to play at Hutto Friday, Nov. 21, with the subvarsities playing at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.

The Lady Dawgs feature seniors Peyton Allen, Sarah Cullison, Kalani Marks, Josephine McDavid, Lezlee Rhodes, Landri Painter-Lewis and Mulhollan, junior Haylie McIntyre, sophomores Alexa Arevalo, Emma Hashbarger and Floyd, and freshmen Rowyn Mulhollan and Marisa Porter Only Allen, Hashbarger and Wrigley Mulhollan are returning lettermen.
